So there's only a week until Metatopia. I will be attending, and I'll be bringing three games: Gerrymandering, Orphanage of Fear, and Glory Hounds. I won't be bringing Outflank since the game is done outside of graphic design and rulebook work.
Though I've talked a lot about Gerrymandering this year, and it is the game I have designated as my high test, Orphanage of Fear is the one I'm most anxious for. In the last few weeks I've been thinking about what the weak parts of the game are and how I can strengthen them. Metatopia will be the big test to see whether those improvements will work or not.
So what are those weaknesses and their fixes? Well, the first is that the dead do nothing. Once you're out, you're out and you have to wait until next game. Oh, you immediately get to see who killed you and you get to watch the struggle, but not everyone wants to wait. So instead, the dead are going to sleep like everyone else, but have their own phase where they vote on who receives the spirit board each night. It keeps eliminated players in the game (even though they are guessing as much as everybody else).
Sounds powerful, almost too powerful, right? Well that's the second change. See the boogeymen have to really struggle to win. To improve their odds I have two small changes. Instead of continually gathering and redistributing all the cards they will now just pass to the player to the left each turn. This allows the boogeymen the opportunity to track the cards that help them (like the puppet, mask and porcelain doll).
I can now hear those of you familiar with the game asking: but doesn't that make the Sackcloth Doll (a moving false positive for the uninitiated) useless? Well, that's the second boost for the boogeymen: they select who gets the Sackcloth doll each night. That should make things interesting.
I also mentioned Glory Hounds. That's in a much rougher state at the moment. I have ideas on how to fix it, but it will require a lot more testing before it's ready.
I hope to see you there. Happy gaming everyone.
