Glory Hounds is a different beast however. It’s a bit more ambitious than most of my other ideas I suppose, though it is meant to have succinct gameplay. One of the ideas I got that I really need to test is reversing the turn order. Part of the game is that the players are playing against themselves, but also against the deck. To that end there is, in essence, a time tracker on each of the cards in the deck. Well, I need to test it, but a simple flip could help speed the game along and give the deck more threat: have them go first. I’ve always had them go after the players, which made the deck rather passive now that I think about it, but having them go first, well then, that could change some things. Bad things happening and players responding to them beats bad things happening after players have already gone. I also need to work on the math for that game, it needs it desperately.
As for other designer’s games? I tested more games for others than I ran my own games, and there were a few standouts. Conquest of the New World was an interesting game, and one that I’d enjoy playing again. It was a bit like a light 4X game. According to the designer, I ran a unique strategy. I hope it helps.
A Brightly Haunted Woods was another game I played, I also watched a game. I can say, without much hesitation, that I preferred watching the game. That’s not an insult to the game, it’s actually quite fun. With two or three players. Unfortunately, I was in a four player game. Then it becomes a little… rough. It’s a difficulty for designers since publishers want games to have four or more player options, still, the game has promise for two and three players, hopefully the designer can figure out something for four or more.
Finally, I played a few games on Sunday, one of which I may have helped find a new name for. Gurglemire, formerly Adventure of the Cimmerian Forest, might just change. It’s an interesting premise, primitive people hunting wild animals with whatever they can gather and make (if you’re a fan of Primitive Technology on Youtube, you can get an idea of what you’re supposed to be thinking about). I still need to talk to the dev about it, Nina has fallen in love with the name.
And I’m sorry I’ve kept pushing back my discussion about why I believe I failed my Kickstarter, but it should be next week.
